Swintex Ltd, a manufacturer of traffic management and street furniture, required a new design of litter paper bins incorporating a ‘keyless’ locking mechanism. Current lockable designs require Cleaning Contractors to carry a number of keys for various manufacturers of litter bins.
Manufacturingconsultants.co.uk worked with Swintex and Raffo, the designers of the bins overall concept shape, to develop a new ‘keyless’ locking mechanism.
The Business Challenge
Swintex sought a ‘keyless’ locking mechanism that:
Deters vandals from removing the litter bin top section (and putting on top of bus shelters!).
Easily removable top section for emptying by Cleaning Staff (if removal technique is known) .
Has a quick method of re-fitting the top section after emptying.
Does not require Cleaning Contractors to carry any key or tool for removing the litter bin top section.
Is resistant to seizing through dirt or environmental attack.
Does not add significantly to the cost of the overall bin design
Manufacturingconsultants.co.uk worked collaboratively with Swintex and Raffo to:
Research the current market for locking mechanisms for litter bins.
Define the end users needs.
Propose a number of design solutions.
Develop small scale prototypes of selected designs.
Organise tooling of final design.
Integrate final design in to production.
Provide on-going support.
Manufacturingconsultants.co.uk designed a ‘Keyless’ Locking System that achieved Swintexs’ goals:
A ‘Keyless’ design consisting of a left handed, uneven, four start thread that can only be removed in one position.
Top section easy to remove if method is known
Deterent to vandals
Self guiding mechanism for easy fitting of top section after emptying
Self guiding mechanism positions top section in position other than removal position.
Mechanism moulded in to top and bottom bin sections – no additional parts means
Cost saving in parts and labour.
Reliable corrosion proof mechanism
A desirable addition to Swintexs’ range of litter bins.
